Welcome to Our New Virtual  Home!

March 30, 2024

The Executive Committee for the Formation of the Charles Burns Family Association is thrilled that you are visiting our new home!

Like any new home, moving in will require exploring its nooks and crannies, rearranging furniture, meeting new friends, and getting settled.

Here are some tips to help you get started.

The membership elects the leadership, so we hope you will participate in the first annual membership meeting on April 20th, 2024 and make sure  we hear loud and ckear how we can best serve you.

We designed this website to adhere to existing and anticipated online privacy laws, so you are asked to review and accept our terms of service, privacy policy, which includes the use of cookies, prior to using the site and becoming a member.

Making this website accessible to all users is our goal. At the lower right of each page, you will see a blue button with the icons of "gingerbread" person. If you click on this button, you can request the application to read the website to you, adjust the size of the fonts, and change the color contrast.

We're all embarking upon on a shakedown cruise of the website together. In the footer of each page is link for you to Contact Us or Report a Problem. Please let us know how we can help!

There are two parts to this website.

    1. Where you are now (https://charlesburnsfamily.org) is the main portion of the website. It's where we will post information and help you submit your family histories.
    2. The second part is the Family of Charles~1720 Repository (https://cb1720.charlesburnsfamily.org), which is a subdomain of this website. It provides access to online genealogical information stored and served to users by The Next Generation of Genealogical Software application. It would require several thousand dollars to integrate the sites so that you could use a single-sign-on for both sites. For now, you will need to sign in to the Family of Charles Burns~1720 Repository even if you are signed into the main website.

When you first log in, you may be asked if you wish to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA). This may sound scary, but most people have used MFA (e. g., you receive a text with a code). However, texts can be intercepted by crooks over cellular networks. This website enables the use of passkeys for authentication. If you have a modern browser or password manager, you can use it to set up a passkey for MFA.

While you are not required to set up MFA, you will be asked to use a strong password that consists of at least 15 characters in which there is ast least 1 upplercase letter, 1 lowercase letter, 1 number, and 1 symbol. We realize that this may seem a hassle, but the recent hack into 23andme.com and the download of DNA results for over 6 million people has transformed security for online genealogical sites. Our goal is to preserve the confidentiality of users and ensure that our repository is safe.

Right now, this web site is a blank slate. Please participate and help us get things rolling!
